Nash Is A Poet

Today marks the 11th day we have NOT been in school because of the weather. YAY! for me, but alas tomorrow we have to return to a life of work and responsibility.  Nash received an assignment from his teacher during our little snow-cation to write a poem about winter or snow.  I just had to share his adorable thoughts on the subject.

Snow is cool.
It makes us miss school.
It comes from the sky.
To catch it, I'll try.
I love snow,
Though it makes the wind blow.
The ground becomes white.
It's a beautiful sight.
Snow is cool,
But I kind of miss school.

Happy Birthday Boys!

I love these two A LOT!

Harley made Nash the most thoughtful book full of all his favorite things, Big Nate, Angry Birds, and the Baltimore Ravens.  So sweet!
Tonight we celebrated the birthday of two of my favorite people. I won't get too mushy about the husband. I will just say he is a great husband, a great dad, a great provider, a great cougar fan, a great popcorn and pancake maker, a great fixer of anything, a great karaoke singer, a great Mountain Dew drinker and a terrible impersonator but I thank him for still trying and for always making me laugh.
My sweet baby Nash. My beautiful baby boy.  My baby that refused to open his eyes for at least a week. My dark-haired angel. You are the heart of our home.  You are our dancing bear and our sports fanatic. You are a peacemaker and you have the kindest soul of anyone I have ever known. You are keenly aware of the needs and desires of others and gladly put yourself second to help another. You are such a hard worker and a natural leader.  You have been given some tremendous gifts from your Heavenly Father, that not only influence the members of your family but all those who come in contact with you.  We feel so privileged that Heavenly Father sent you to us.  We love you forever and always!
Happy 9th birthday Jo Jo Pet!

Nash's Baptism

As prepared as we thought we were when we packed the car and set out to leave for Nash's baptism, we still had drama.  Things were going remarkably smoothly considering one child and one mother had strep throat and another child had a double-ear infection. The baptism boy was well, so we just had to survive the day and I really believed I was prepared for anything and that I had thought of everything. After, the electricity went out for Atley's baptism, I felt certain I could handle whatever happened.  Oh, how the mighty fall!  Granny, Grandma Butler, Atley, Nash, Harley and I went to the church at 7:30 AM to fill the font, set up the chairs and the refreshment tables, get the slide show ready, practice songs and talks and take pictures for the big event.  Dad and Grandpa Butler had to get themselves ready and pick up the pre-ordered donuts and hot chocolate and be there no later than 9:15 AM.  We got the chairs set up. Atley practiced his song and Harley practiced her talk to perfection.  The font was filling on schedule.  We decided to set up a different room for the donut and hot chocolate bar.  Somewhere in the midst of all the chairs and font filling I lost my phone.  As we were setting everything up I realized I had forgotten the whipped cream.  I frantically searched for my phone to call Scott and have him bring some. I couldn't find it, so I had to use my mom's phone. I discovered an exasperated voice on the other line. Scott had been trying to call me for over an hour. He was no longer at home and the donut order wasn't anywhere near ready. We also discovered in our conversation that neither of us remembered to bring an extra white shirt. There was no time for him to go home again before the baptism.  He would just have to put a wet shirt on under his suit jacket and there would be no whipped cream.  Now if the Dunkin Donut guy would hurry up, he might just make it on time.  In all the confusion, I realized I hadn't turned off the font. I raced down the hall to shut off the water. It was about a centimeter from flooding.  The moment Scott and Nash got in, it would surely be overflowing all over the church floor.  What to do?  The only way to unplug it would be to get in the water.  We sent Nash in naked.  Unplugging it was no problem.  It was at a reasonable depth in a couple of minutes and so we told Nash to dive down and plug it back in.  He dived down but could not get it plugged back in.  He tried again and again, but his bootie kept bobbing back up.  Guests were arriving and witnessing three women gathered around the font directing a naked boy with words like, "Reach, Stretch, Your not trying hard enough." I am fairly certain some ran away in horror.  We even sent him into the font with a broom, but try as he may,  he could not get the plug back in place.  The font was draining fast. I had to turn on the water to try to offset the water we were losing.  Everyone was there and all they could hear was water draining and water running. The microphone wasn't working properly and I couldn't get the TV to work for the slide show that I had spent hours putting together. Still there was no Scott or Grandpa Butler and everyone had already been waiting for ten minutes and the water was draining fast.  Finally, Scott  arrived and a friend had offered to run home and get another white shirt-one small crisis averted.  We started the program with the soundtrack of a very loud babbling brook as mood music behind my talk on Baptism.  Of course, at this point the water pouring into the font was ice cold because the hot water had been exhausted at least an hour earlier. Additionally, the water pressure couldn't keep up with the rapidity of the drain.  Half-way through my talk I saw Scott get up and leave.  A small moment of panic for me-but he quickly returned soaking wet up to his knees and miraculously the sound of draining and running water stopped.  Luckily, he decided he better wade in before there was no water left. Nash was baptized in 2 feet of water, but he was baptized none the less. When he came out of the water he rightfully exclaimed, "WHOA! That was cold!"  Atley's solo was amazing and Harley's talk was fantastic. The microphone miraculously worked for both of them. I completely lost my voice about 20 minutes after the baptism and it didn't return for 3 days, another tender mercy. The slide-show was a big bust but the boys dressed quickly, so I am the only one who was disappointed.  Despite the stress and drama, the spirit was felt by all who attended, even those friends who are not of our faith.  It was a memorable day for all of us and one not to be forgotten by Nash anytime soon.  The hot chocolate and donut bar was a big hit. Thanks to the mother of Nash's best friend I even got one picture of him in his Baptismal whites!  Also thank you to another friend who grabbed my camera and took pictures of all the festivities, when I was too rattled to remember.  Thank goodness for great friends and the power of prayer.

Nash's 8th Birthday

Nash celebrated his 8th birthday a couple of weeks ago.  The highlight of turning 8 was of course his baptism, more on that later. We also took him to a Baltimore Ravens football game.  He is their #1 fan!  It is almost ridiculous how deep his obsession goes. He literally makes himself sick with worry when he watches a Raven's games.  He loses his appetite and goes completely berserk if they lose.
Here he is meeting his favorite player Dennis Pitta a few weeks before his birthday.
Seeing the game in person was almost more excitement than he could handle. He was a nervous wreck. Thankfully, they won and he was instantly the happiest boy on earth. He could not stop talking about it for days.  We got to the game early enough for him to be able to get close to the field and see the players up close. He was stunned, as we all were, at how enormous they were in person.

When we got home from the game we ate birthday cake. Unfortunately, I failed to buy candles so, just to clarify, Nash is not turning 33!
He had his favorite, P.F. Chang's, for his birthday dinner and contrary to the look on his face in the picture above, he loved it.
Happy Birthday Big Guy! We love you lots.

8 IS GREAT

Not really sure how it happened because I am fairly certain that just a few days ago I was bringing this dark-headed baby boy home and stuffing him into a Christmas stocking to get the cutest picture ever; and now he is almost 8 and getting baptized next Saturday.  We are so excited for him!

Reading Rodeo

Life has been busy with the school year FINALLY drawing to a close, only 16 days left!  Last week Nash had Reading Rodeo. It is a Hoe Down to celebrate all that the 1st graders have accomplished during the school year.  I know I am not very objective but he was the cutest little cowboy EVER!

Nash also had to square dance and since he is still in the all girls have cooties stage. We had a great time teasing him about his dance partner.  The truth is I think he liked dancing with the girls a little more than he cared to admit.  Check out the short video below!

Since this post is all about Nash, I will take this opportunity to brag about him.  He has his last baseball game of the spring season this weekend. He has loved it.  He had to take a turn playing catcher last week and definitely prefers playing 1st base.  He had an unbelievable hit during his last game. It bounced off the fence and would have gone completely out of the park if it was only a couple of inches higher.  When I asked him what he thought when he hit the ball so hard he said, "I was like Son of a BEEP!"  No, he did not say the real curse word he actually said "BEEP" which is how he swears without really swearing and it drives me bonkers!

The Embarrassing Beaver Boy

This post is dedicated to my son who has been recently called Beaver Boy because of his gorgeous front chompers.  As you can see he has embraced this new nickname by gnawing on the wood molding in our home. I can think of a few better names for this mean little kid. Nash has been a bit more vocal lately. Translation:  Nash has said a bunch of embarrassing things lately.  I am going to share four of them so that they can forever be chronicled in the everlasting annuls of the Internet. Warning: Some of the information shared below may be considered too obscene for some audiences.

1.  Nash accidentally threw a football over the fence into the neighbor's yard.  Our neighbor is a super nice man but for some reason Nash was terrified to ask for his ball back.  He finally recruited his brother to go with him to knock on the neighbor's door.  Of course the neighbor was nice and returned Nash's football. This neighbor is also an older gentleman. He is quite tall, very thin and completely bald.  As Nash was thanking him and leaving the neighbor's house I hear him yell back, "Thanks again and I really hope your cancer gets better!"  The neighbor does not have cancer.
2.  Nash was invited to a paint ball birthday party. He was so excited despite my warning that paint balls hurt when they hit you.  As we walked the little boys up to the paint ball course, I could hear Nash talking trash to his buddies about how he was going to destroy them.  Less than 5 seconds into the first round Nash was shot directly into his manhood.  At which point he began rolling around the ground screaming, "My nuts! My nuts!  You shot off my nuts!"  He began pulling off his clothes and yelling for me, "Mom, I can't look!  Please help me! Look and see if I still have my nuts!" I checked and they were in tact. He did not believe my reassurances but was too afraid to look himself, certain that they were either missing or bleeding.  In front of a crowd of parents he asked me to describe them to him so that he could know for sure if they were okay. I just walked away shaking my head.  30 seconds later he was screaming again. "My nipple! You shot off my nipple!"
3.  Nash is a very good little baseball player.  He was proud to tell me that one of his coaches even told him that he was "builded like Bryce Harper!"  This news is especially exciting for a lefty like Nash since Bryce is also left-handed. We have spent many hours at the ball field this spring.  Last night it was our family's turn to provide the team snack.  It was a very warm summer-like night so along with some other treats I took along some watermelon.  As the kids and families gathered around to partake.  Nash made the announcement that I decided to bring watermelon because I was very concerned about how fat some of the kids and their parents were getting.  Of course that was a huge lie designed to make me squirm which was made only worse by the fact that there are a number of chubby kids on the team.

4.  In LDS jargon I am called the Primary President, which means that I am in charge of the kids ages 18 months to 12 years old each Sunday. One might assume that a person with this job would have children who were not only well behaved but had a basic understanding of what is and is not appropriate to say at church. We have been working on sharing our testimony's of the gospel in primary each month.  Nash has never felt the desire to share his testimony so I was ecstatic and nervous to see him stand up to share his feelings about the church and his Savior.  I quickly whispered in his ear before he reached the pulpit that his job was not to make people laugh but to be serious.  This is me paraphrasing what Nash said:  "My brother has a friend that said he would give me $20 to give up my religion and join his.  I told him I wouldn't do it for $20 but I would do it for $40 because I really wanted the Lego Sandcrawler.  He said we had a deal and then he started to tell me about his religion.  He said when a man and woman get married the man goes inside the woman..."  Imagine me running to his side to yank him away from the microphone at this point.  I was terrified about what might come out of his mouth next. I jerked him into the hallway furious and more embarrassed than I can express.  I asked him what he was talking about and more importantly what was his point.  Why would he think that the crazy and creepy story he was sharing was a testimony?  My handling of the situation will most likely cause him to never ever share his testimony again.  He explained to me that his brother's friend, who is Hindu, told him how he believed that when a person dies he becomes a star but when a man and woman get married a new man is formed in the woman's belly from that star.  At this point I was a little bit relieved that he had not actually been educated  about the birds and bees from a 9 year old boy.  He further explained that he was going to say that when he heard about that weird religion, our church didn't seem so weird and he decided not to accept the $40 even though he still really wanted that Lego set.  We had a long talk about how discussions or criticisms about other churches was really not appropriate.

Despite his uncanny ability to tease and embarrass me on occasion, I love him so very much and I adore the card he made me for Mother's Day!

An Undesirable Plant

I almost called this post WEED, but I was a little afraid that I would get a lot of Stoner traffic so I changed the title.  However, Nash starred as a WEED in his first grade play, entitled, "How Does Your Garden Grow?"  Apparently, being a WEED is the most socially acceptable part a 7 year old boy can aspire too, because Nash was stoked. It also appeared that every naughty boy in the 1st grade received the same part. It looked like a green gang of future ex-cons.  My son excluded, of course. I hope and pray that there is no correlation between being a weed and smoking weed someday but I guess only time will tell.
Please enjoy this video of Nash performing with his ensemble of Weed Brothers!
He is the Weed farthest to the left.

All-About Nash

(Nash at his school's ice-skating party at the Washington Capitals Practice Facility)
Nash is growing up much faster than I would like him to.  He had his first away-from-home-friend sleepover last weekend.  When I dropped him off I told him to call me if he got nervous or sad.  At 10PM I got a phone call.  The caller-id told me it was from Nash.  I must admit I was pretty excited that he might need me or miss me.  I answered. "Hi Mom!" (Hi, buddy what's wrong?)  "Nothin' ! Just wanted to say Peace Out, Home Dog!" (Click)  Well, it wasn't exactly the phone call I was expecting or wanting but it was something.  I also wanted to brag on Nash for a bit. Last semester he won his school's citizenship award for showing kindness and respect for others.  So, while he wants us all to believe he is super macho he has a genuinely kind heart-a mischievous heart, but a kind heart.  Things have been challenging for him, especially at school this year.  I am not writing this to embarrass him but rather I hope he reads it someday and realizes how much he has overcome with hard work and perseverance and that he can do anything he puts his mind and heart into.  He has made so much progress because he is determined to be a success and he is the greatest success story I know. He is smart, talented and loving and I'm so proud he is my baby boy.
(He loves watching Hockey. I think the Olympics peaked his interest.)
(One of Nash's favorite spots-perched on top of the counter playing Angry Birds or Star Wars!)
